2023 marked two auspicious anniversaries for Okkervil River – the 10th anniversary of The Silver Gymnasium and the 20th anniversary of Down the River of Golden Dreams. So, to celebrate the happy occasion, we’ve whipped up some exclusive holiday merch, including the first Okkervil River cassette release in five years.
A big hit on the Will Sheff Patreon earlier this year, the full-length album Like a Solid Ghost is a “de-imagining” of The Silver Gymnasium, featuring every song from the original 2013 release reconfigured and reconstructed from radically different demos, early versions, bonus materials and rehearsal tapes. At the suggestion of Okkervil River fans, we’ve decided to issue it in an exclusive limited-edition cassette run. To pair with this cassette release, we’ve brought back the popular vintage “station wagon” tour shirt design from the 2013 Silver Gymnasium tour and are issuing it as a cozy commemorative sweatshirt.
Because Down the River of Golden Dreams was the second Okkervil River album and made in much leaner times, a tour tee-shirt was never made for this release, so we’ve also decided to rectify that a couple of decades late by printing William Schaff’s octopus-man cover design (the full image, not the crop from the album cover) on a commemorative tee.
We’ll also have a limited stock of another vintage design, 2004’s brown-and-red lion design, originally featured in the artwork for Sleep and Wake-Up Songs and modified into a t-shirt design by Ryan Nole of Kangaroo Press. This was our best-selling shirt for several years.
